On Running Cloudmonster Review

On Running has made a name for itself as a more minimalist shoe - just look at the Cloudflow, one of the first running shoes that really got the brand noticed. But in the last couple of years, On has adapted the unique cloud technology to create high cushioned, maximalist trainers like the Cloudstratus and more recently, the Cloudmonster.

On Running Cloudmonster: The Details

The On Running Cloudmonster is On’s most cushioned shoe - if you’re a fan of Hokas, pay attention. The Cloudmonster features On’s largest CloudTec elements, making them an incredibly energy efficient shoe, with great spring and energy return. And don’t worry, no stones get stuck in these clouds - On rectified that a couple of years ago. Although the sole is pretty large, they’re still relatively lightweight, spacious, comfortable and breathable, making them ideal for ticking off the miles.

What Runners Are They Best For?

The Cloudmonsters were built for pounding out miles on the road, they’re super springy and very responsive. If you’re training for anything over a 10k distance, then the On Cloudmonster is the shoe you should be running in, you’ll tick off the miles with ease and the strain on your legs would be a lot less than wearing something like the Cloudflow, which are a lot more minimalist.

On actually recommends the Monster as a training shoe, not a racing shoe, perfect for anything from speedy 5ks to marathons. However, there’s no reason you couldn't turn up at a race in these.

On Running Cloudmonster: Fit & Size Guide

On says this shoe fits true to size, however I still like to go up ½ a size, but maybe I just like a roomy toe box. It’s a medium-width shoe, and the toe box feels nice and airy. As a long run shoe, it’s always better to have more room in the toe box, as our feet swell when we run, not to mention if you’re attacking hills, having more space will make for a much more comfortable ride on the downhill.

With a 6mm drop and neutral support, there isn’t a whole load of additional arch support, which shouldn’t be a problem for most people.

On Running Cloudmonster: the Upper

The Cloudmonster’s are made from around 35% recycled material, much of which is found in the upper. The upper is split into two layers, a durable mesh on the top and a softer one inside for added comfort. It’s very breathable and hardy. I’ve already put quite a few miles on the Cloudmonsters and they’re holding up very well.

Looking a little more closely at the sustainability of this shoe, the tongue, heel, laces, and sock liner are all made with 100% recycled polyester. The tongue is very lightweight and soft, and lies flat to the foot. There are also minimal seams, mitigating the chance of fraying or rubbing. The lacing system is simple but it works and holds your foot in place comfortably - and that’s all we ask.

On Running Cloudmonster: the Midsole and Outsole

Just looking at the midsole of this shoe you can see where it got its name - it really is ‘monstrous’. The Cloudmonster features the largest Cloudtec pods on any On Cloud shoe, resulting in greater energy return and a wonderful ‘springiness’ underfoot.

The outsole is another example of just how far along On has come. For enhanced grip, the tread has multidirectional patterns. I’ve worn it on dry and wet roads, as well as on compact gravel, and it performed well on all of them. The gully on the bottom of the shoe towards the front and back is also very shallow, and the chamfered edges on the middle of the sole stop the chance of any gravel and stones getting caught.

You’ll notice the Cloudmonster also has a strong rocker, which helps provide a smooth transition from landing to take off.

On Running Cloudmonster: The Verdict

The On Running Cloudmonster is an impressive shoe. It makes running a joy and really helps keep the legs fresh on long runs with its brilliant high cushioning. I own a lot of On Running shoes and this has become my go-to on the roads.

On creates shoes in a variety of different colours and for the Cloudmonster you can shop now the Acai/Aloe and Black/Magnet. Due to the popularity of the shoe, I’m sure it won't be long before they bring out more styles…
